Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. xi, [i], xlii, 445; viii, [iii], 484; x, [i], 512; ix, [ii], 508 pp., thick 8vo, mustard-tan cloth, paper title labels on the backstrips, edges untrimmed; vol. IV partially unopened. An early translation from the Spanish by P. A. Motteux; plate illustrations by French etcher Adolphe Lalauze. The DELUXE EDITION with each of the 37 tissue-guarded plates in two states. The second-state plates are in sanguine and are printed on Japan vellum. This is copy no. 64 of a limited edition of 100, signed by the publisher John Grant on the verso of the half title to volume I. Each copy bears the bookplate of the noted journalist, author, bibliophile, and editor of The Country Gentleman and Ladies Home Journal, Barton Wood Currie (1877-1962). A scarce edition of this iconic work. Very good, attractive set overall; light dust-soiling to the covers (mostly noticeably across the lower backstrips), a few small areas of discoloration and bubbling to rear cover of vol. II, mild and very scattered light foxing, a bit of wear and toning to title labels, bump to one cover corner.
