Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Described by Dame Muriel herself as a "meditation on The Book of Job", the "problem" addressed in this novel is the old chestnut about how a loving, omnipotent Supreme Being can sit by and allow all the suffering in world. Not that you have to be a theologian to enjoy the story. Very slight knock to one top corner, otherwise a fine copy in fine dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. If books could be designed for maximum confusion and ambiguity, this would be a front-runner. Let's start with the author: This is not Rosemary Ann Harris, the British actress now best known for playing Aunt May Parker in the early Spider-Man movies. Nor is it Rosemary Simari Harris, American author of mystery thrillers. No, this is Rosemary Jeanne Harris, born in England in 1923 and fairly prolific author across a wide range of genres. She is best known for her Egypt trilogy which started with the Carnegie Medal-winning "The Moon in the Cloud" in 1968. She has also worked with Errol Le Cain to produce several magnificent picture books. But throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's, she also wrote several feminine romantic suspense novels, the first being "The Summer-House" in 1956, and "Voyage to Cythera" being the second. Further confusion is incurred with this title, which is also used for many other things including an obscure musical documentary and several pieces of music, a painting by Watteau, a poem by Baudelaire, a short story by Margaret Drabble and, most notably, the 1984 Anglo/Italian/German/Greek movie of the same name, which has nothing at all to do with this novel. (That movie was directed by Theodoros Angelopoulos, by the way, who also directed one of my favorite foreign films, "The Beekeeper", but this really is digressing!) Back to the book. Minor browning to edges and endpapers, but a very good copy indeed in very good dust jacket indeed with minimal browning and edgewear. Lovely copy in its attractive Sally Holliday jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: VG-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. Shepher, Ernest H. (illustrator). 5th or later Edition. Vg-/Vg- This Is Apparently The First Printing Of The 1973 Bodley Head 6Th Edition, With The Original Having Been Published In 1898. It Has Dove Grey Boards With Gilt Titles And Contains No Writing Or Marks. There Is Just A Hint Of Discoloration At The Ends Of The Front Board. The Dust Jacket Is Unclipped, Showing Original Price Of L1.20, But The Spine Is Quite Faded And There Is Some Loss At Upper Spine. This Edition Includes An Afterward By Namoi Lewis Written In 1962 Which Had Served As An Introduction To The 5Th Edition. Oddly, She Describes Him As A 'Bachelor Banker,' Somehow Being Unaware Of His Son Alistair, Who Was Born At The End Of The 19Th Century And Committed Suicide Just Before His 20Th Birthday. Perhaps She Simply Meant That He Had No Children When He Wrote This Book And The Companion Volume, The Golden Age, But One Would Have Expected Greater Care On The Part Of The Venerable Bodley Head. She Does Point Out That These Two Early Books Were Very Popular And Particularly Apparently Pleased Both Teddy Roosevelt And The Kaiser, And That When After A Decade Of Silence, The Wind And The Willows Was Published Many Of These Earlier Fans Were Disappointed. This Book Contains The Reluctant Dragon. Which Hs Been Performed In Numerous Forms And Eras, Including The 1941 Walt Disney Film.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Jean Dulac (illustrator). First edition thus. Probably the best known work of the prolific novelist, short story writer and playwright, Wm J. Locke. This is the beloved tale of a beloved character, Paragot ("please pronounce his name French-fashion"), a "glorious lunatic" who undertakes some rather eccentric ways of educating a young waif. First published in 1905 (or 1906 according to some sources), this is the first illustrated edition, and jolly well illustrated it is. There are 16 very lovely color plates, printed on glossy art paper, and numerous little drawings throughout; the work of painter and sculptor, Jean Dulac (not to be confused with Edmund Dulac, or indeed with Jean's son, also an artist and also a Jean Dulac, who was born in 1928). This copy seems to be a variant binding - I usually see this book in beige cloth with dark blue lettering and decoration stamped on spine and upper cover. Here we have the same design but with a nice brown cloth stamped in lime green. Bottom edges are untrimmed (very much so!). There is a little wear to spine ends, but the main problem here is the spotting. Scattered foxing throughout, mostly pretty light and worse on edges and prelims, although a few pages are more heavily affected on top margins. None of the color plates, however, are affected at all. A very good copy. And there's a dust jacket! OK, it's not very good (meaning that it's "good"). The front panel, with the Dulac illustration, is complete but is rubbed and a little browned and the bottom, where the price of "Twelve Shillings and Sixpence net" is printed, is crossed through with three light ink strokes. Rear panel and flap also complete, rubbed and darkened, with edgewear, nicks and chips to extremities. The spine panel is worn, torn and darkened and almost detached at the gutters, with large chips missing at the top and a section missing at the base affecting the publisher's name. Still nice to have any form of this jacket still wrapped around the book after nearly 100 years.
