Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book, written for young people ages eight to twelve, tells readers in clear terms what meteorites are, where they come from, what kinds there are, how to look for them, and what to look for if you find a rock you think might be a meteorite. It encourages scientific exploration because the truth is anyone can find a meteorite. Souvenirs from Space also tells the story of Fort Worth lawyer Oscar Monnig who became known as the "Meteorite Man from Texas." He spent many years searching for meteorites in Texas and Oklahoma, following stories of meteorites sightings, often running into dead ends, but just as often finding another gem for his collection. In his lifetime, he collected almost 400 meteorites. He donated his collection to the geology department at TCU and provided for the establishment of the Monnig Meteorite Gallery, which is open to the public. Fort Worth school children frequently tour the gallery as part of their science study. Souvenirs from Space is designed for children who visit the gallery, to give them a lasting souvenir of their lesson about meteorites. But it's also for all children interested in astronomy or meteorites. It will make them, too, want to visit the gallery. Written for young people ages eight to twelve, this book tells readers what meteorites are, where they come from, what kinds there are, how to look for them, and what to look for if you find a rock you think might be a meteorite. It also tells the story of Fort Worth lawyer Oscar Monnig who became known as the ""Meteorite Man from Texas. Paperback. Condition: new. White, Mack (illustrator). Paperback. Drawing upon the increasing popularity of graphic or illustrated novels among young readers, Texas Tales Illustrated: The Revolution is an innovative retelling of the Texas revolution for independence, sure to become an invaluable classroom resource. Author Mike Kearby and illustrator Mack White designed the book for use in seventh grade Texas history courses in response to a need for more interactive textbooks, which will appeal to the learning styles of students in today's overwhelmingly visual media culture. White's detailed line drawings recall classic comic book style and capture the dramatic tension of the battles, while Kearby's narration is enticing, full of intriguing historical detail. The comic pages are supplemented with traditional text, including excerpts of historical documents and visual materials such as maps and battlefield schematics. Students at three North Texas middle schools found the graphic format 'easy to read,' the illustrations 'exciting' and well executed. Many responded that they would check out the book from their school libraries - even if the text were not required reading. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. BN4 - A paperback book SIGNED and inscribed by author to previous owner on the title page in very good condition that has some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. 1993 Winner of the Annual Sydney Taylor Award presented by the Association of Jewish Librarians. A Chaparral Book for Young Readers. 9"x6", 144 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. From 1900 until 1917, the Jewish population of Texas more than doubled, from 15,000 to over 31,000. Many who immigrated through the Port of Galveston had an opportunity to bypass the difficult tenement experiences of the East, but a new life in the American West offered challenges of its own. The Treasure in the Tiny Blue Tin is based on the experiences of those immigrants. When twelve-year-old Max Miller immigrates to America with his mother and sister in 1912, he wants only to be together with his family and forget the old country where they were persecuted for being Jewish and where his two brothers died. The family lives above Max's uncle's store, and Max, on a treasured new bicycle, makes deliveries for his uncle. Not at all a typical Texan, Max likes to go to school, doesn't know how to swim or fish and is afraid of horses, completely the opposite of Joe Hollis, the blacksmith's son, who taunts Max about being Jewish and a greenhorn. When his papa, a peddler, doesn't come home for Passover, Max fears he may be a victim of an outbreak of meningitis. Max decides to ride his bicycle in search of his father, and his journey leads over flooded creeks and unfamiliar territory. Joe follows him out of town and joins him on his journey. The two boys learn to understand each other and become fast friends as they survive the perils of wilderness Texas. The Treasure in the Tiny Blue Tin is filled with action and inspiring courage. Always mindful of following Jewish beliefs and customs, Max is determined to bring his father home safely and share the joy and hope of being in America. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
