Paperback. Condition: Good. "This book", Patricia Lunneborg writes, "documents a brilliant way out, for fifteen individuals, of this Age of Uncertainty for men." This way out is the Open University. "OU Men" studies and documents the way that this remarkable institution has affected, indeed empowered, the lives of fifteen working men who hail from Manchester, Preston, and the East End, but also from Iran, India, Uganda, Ghana and Jamaica. Lawry Rhodes studied Law at Nottingham University, but failed his second year examinations. He became a building society manager, but found that his employers were more and more concerned with statistics and personal profit than with his interests or those of his customers. He began to learn with the Open University. Fearing for his job, "morally disgruntled", but now with much study behind him, he quit. Today, with a B.A., Lawry Rhodes is a high school English teacher, and has published his poetry in a scholarly journal. He is one of the men who here narrate their lives up to and through the experience of further education at the Open University. The backdrop is the rapid and ruthless development in the world of work, especially the male world of work, in the second half of the twentieth century. Through the interviews recorded here, these men explain what education with the Open University has made possible for them in their different environments, how it has affected not only their attitudes to work and their job prospects, but also their relationships and often their values. From this candid interview material, Dr Lunneborg develops a wide-ranging analysis of the relationships between employment, education and personal life in contemporary Britain.Drawing upon the work of Charles Handy, Jeremy Rifkin and Will Hutton, she analyses the phenomena of downsizing, job-dissatisfaction, 'presenteeism' (the compulsion to work absurdly long hours) and the threat of obsolescence, drawing out a cautiously optimistic prognosis. Education alone can develop the portable skills portfolio that forms the basis for a lifelong and manageable working life. Yet no less important, the author urges, is the willingness to detach male identities from paid employment, and to learn to bend our increased flexibility to the needs and opportunities of community service. "OU Men" will interest the ever increasing number of people involved in or considering an OU course, or any other distance learning programme. It will also be of value to those involved in the teaching and psychology of distance learning, and to anyone concerned with the anatomy of contemporary Britain and the ongoing changes in the world labour market."An inspiring and powerful book.the stories of these OU men pack a tremendous punch of optimism and hope. These inspiring stories contain some wonderful vignettes of modern life." - From the Foreword by Sir John Daniel, Vice Chancellor of The Open University. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Part of the Century series - each book reviews and summarises the key developments in a particular branch of religious studies during the past century. Protestant theology did not begin a hundred years ago, but it is within the last century that so many significant developments have taken place. It is these developments which are Alasdair Heron's primary concern, though in order to put them in their proper context, he has also provided outlines of earlier thinking. Whilst the main emphasis is Protestant, the last chapter looks at the new horizons opened up by encounter with the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, with other religions and with the natural sciences. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "Music, be it Beethoven, Bartok or the Beatles," writes Yehudi Menuhin, "brings us together in a sharing of sound and feeling" which transcends boundaries. Thus, through the stories, poems and accounts in this anthology, we may join African slaves in 19th-century New Orleans as they create their spontaneous, vital, rhythmic music; and may walk with the exiled Bartok as he remembers the joyful honesty, and the vigorous tenderness, of the songs of Hungary. Exemplified in these stories is the deep attachment of composer and musicians to the land of their roots - "the lands that gave them their ears, their voices, the particular musical language they use." Here are stories illustrating the music of men and women living 'in tune' with the earth: Aborigine and Inuit, Bushman and American Indian; a woman singing to the Hebridean seals, whose voices answer hers; a Celtic prince entranced by 'the music of the world'. Here are composers and conductors, makers and lovers of music from other times and other countries, other cultures and other landscapes. The lilt of Gypsy music and the haunting chants of the Balkans; girls dancing in Rhodes, and children dancing in a Japanese grove; the songs of a Somerset soldier and of the peasants in Russia; the discipline and complex beauty of Indian music and the deep sense of melody in Hasidic tales: all these illuminate the infinite range of music, within which we may, each retaining perfect individuality, share a universe "in which music and life are one and the same thing". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Good. In the debate about homosexuality one thing that seems clear - on a issue renowned for lack of clarity and controversy - is that two fundamentally incompatible positions continue to held tenaciously. One asserts that homosexual acts are legitimate, the other that they are not. Concentration on the legitimacy of sexual expression rather than on underlying needs has made the debate about homosexuality incapable of resolution. Homosexuality : A New Christian Ethic presents a psychoanalytic interpretation that has shifted the focus of the debate from symptoms to root causes. The crux of Elizabeth Moberly's argument is that 'the homosexual condition involves legitimate developmental needs, the fulfilment of which has been blocked by an underlying ambivalence to members of the same sex'. But while the argument is certainly controversial, it involves a much-needed restatement of the traditional Christian distinction between the homosexual condition and its expression in homosexual activity. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'And there appeared a great wonder in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun.' - Revelation 12, 1. Press advertisements over several decades calling for the opening of 'Joanna Southcott's Box' have made her name familiar to the public, but little more is widely known about her. This new biography of the Devon-born visionary and prophet uses previously unidentified sources to give the definitive account of her life, her writings and her influence. Born in 1750 to a Devon farmer, and growing through a rural childhood unexceptional for the time, Joanna Southcott's life was changed in 1792 when she heard the 'still, small Voice' that was to inform and guide her for the next 20 years. Her claims that it was the word of God speaking through her were rejected by church leaders, yet her prophesies of the Second Coming and her 'sealing' of believers against harm gave her many followers. Some of her writings, she was told by her inner voice, were to be kept secret and only revealed when requested by the 24 Church of England Bishops at a time of great danger - hence the existence of the famous Box. Frances Brown has researched not only in Joanna's 65 published works and unpublished manuscripts, but also among letters, newspapers, guildhall and parish records, local histories and genealogies, and even trade directories. She identifies many of the previously elusive people, places and events associated with Joanna's life. Central to Joanna Southcott's writings is the fight between good and evil in the world which, as in the Revelation of St. John, is to culminate in a terrible battle leading to a great victory for Christ over the Devil. Interest in such prophesies has increased with heightened fears of expanded potential for disasters in the new Millennium. This book will serve a need felt by many to know more about the woman who is numbered among the most influential of modern English visionaries. Among other illustrations is the first photograph of Joanna Southcott's box to be published in 140 years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Bible, as is often said, is the world's least-read bestseller. That is particularly true of the Old Testament. People are often put off by the sheer bulk of the material and its frequently undistinguished quality. John Dancy has selected large samples from most of the canonical and apocryphal books, amounting to just under a third of the total, chosen for artistic merit and intrinsic interest rather than for representative status or theological value. Literature of this stature, he says, should not be restricted to academics and believers. To make it more approachable, the text is presented with commentary on the same page, in smaller type so that attention is never diverted from the original. The commentary mostly concentrates on literary matters but provides technical explanations where necessary. In addition a sensitive and sound introduction also puts the Hebrew writings in the historical context of the ancient Near East. Extracts are used from a variety of translations, preferring the most faithful in language, tone and style for each section. Accuracy is a prime concern, but so is poetry. Above all, the selections bring out the inherent dramatic qualities of the verse dialogues and narrative prose. Nothing quite like this has yet been made available. The Divine Drama will be a welcome addition to the library of any thoughtful reader who cares for good stories. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Since 1737 readers of all kinds have relied on Cruden's Complete Concordance to the Old and New Testaments as their guide to the Bible. Its simple alphabetical arrangement and compact design make it easy to navigate the more than 225,000 entries. As well as listing verses that include each word treated, Cruden's quotes each passage briefly to provide an indication of context. When the sense is unclear, the word is defined and different meanings explained. So, whether you want to find all the places where 'write' is used or you need to know the varying senses of 'adoption', Cruden's Concordance is an invaluable study companion. The work has been frequently revised and corrected, and few comparable reference books can be as accurate and up-to-date. It is based on the Authorised Version, but also notes places where the Revised Version or American Revision has altered the text. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A vibrant collection of paintings and drawings of the landscape and wildlife of the Thames, following the river as it flows from the rural countryside of Gloucestershire, meandering past fields, villages and towns, through the heart of metropolitan London and to the sea. After his previous book on the River Derwent, Riverside Journey, Ashley Bryant took up the challenge of painting the Thames, the most famous and fascinating river in England. The book covers the story of the whole river, from beginning to end, providing an artist's view of the most interesting places it passes, giving a great view and insight into the life of the river. The paintings reflect the beauty of the river itself, of the natural landscape through which it passes, and many of the architectural gems? Palaces, Oxford colleges, churches, as well as bridges and humble cottages. That have been raised alongside it. The Thames is an ideal companion for anyone walking beside the river, boating on it, or simply interested in the wildlife and the countryside that surrounds the Thames. As such it will appeal to those who live near the Thames, as well as to visitors. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Casuistry is a process of reasoning that focuses upon specific cases or moral problems, as opposed to a general study of ethical theories. In this broad sense every moral philosopher may be regarded as a casuist in some form. The term also has a narrower meaning as it refers to a group of moralists who, in the 16th and 17th century, systematically adopted this method. Casuistry is now one of the options for those who, in the framework of the post-modern anti-systematic attitude, still feel the importance of serious moral debate and reject easy-minded relativism. This work anticipates this development. It recognizes the legacy of casuist tradition and faces moral issues relevant to contemporary society. The author examines crucial moral problems, and offers arguments drawn from religion and those committed to religious worship and community. An extensive introduction places Kirk's approach to casuistry in the context of a general discussion of the term, its meaning and the ways in which it has been variously interpreted. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Fair. Benjamin Weir was the first American hostage to be released from captivity in Lebanon having been held for sixteen months by Islamic Jihad Shiites. Hostage Bound, Hostage Free tells the remarkable story of Ben's kidnap, his imprisonment and his eventual release. It is also the poignant story of Carol, his wife, and her attempts to involve the United States' government in Ben's release. Ben and Carol's experiences, told here in their own words, provide a unique insight into the world of hostages, hostage-takers and international politics. Terry Waite, whose role was crucial, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Colonel Oliver North, Robert MacFarlane and George Schultz all figured in the attempts to obtain Ben's release. Ben and Carol Weir were working in Lebanon when their lives were irrevocably altered by events beyond their control. Each suffered isolation, pain, fear and despair, but the outcome is a tale of determination, hope, courage and faith. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Liturgical theology tends towards the anthropocentric, focussing primarily on the behaviour of the worshippers. The theology of Thomas F. and James B. Torrance, however, provides an alternative approach: a Trinitarian and Christocentric study of liturgy, which decentralises the worshippers' position in liturgy and focusses instead on Christ, the One who is worshipped. In Trinitarian Doxology, Kevin J. Navarro examines the Torrances' theology, explicating and illuminating their work, whilst simultaneously providing critical analysis which provides a lens for deeper understanding.
