Published by Adams Express Company, March 1, 1882., Cincinnati, OH:, 1882
Seller: Zephyr Used & Rare Books, Vancouver, WA, U.S.A.
First Edition
8vo. [10], 87, [1] pp., w/ added leaf of errata inserted printed on yellow-tinted paper. With 67 pp. of table columns for tariffs and currency rates neatly filled out in ink manuscript, numerous stations added in manuscript. Contemporary quarter-calf over marbled boards, printed Adams-Express Company, Western Division label mounted on front cover, "Cincinnati, OH, 1882" in ink manuscript at lower edge of label (minor chipping head & foot of spine, minor chipping to 1 corner, wear to other corners, minor soot soiling to endpapers), still a VG copy. First edition, thus, of this exceedingly scarce Adams Express Co. in-house manual for a Cincinnati, OH Express Co. agent which provided a quick tariff and shipping rate reference for the company's lines, all neatly filled out in contemporary hand with point-to-point rates. Some of the "Western Division" lines were still under construction such as the Grand Rapids & Indiana RR, Louisville, New Albany & St. Louis RR main line, while others were undergoing name changes. This manual offers an invaluable reference to the stations operating at the time, with new stations being added in neat manuscript ink, or renamed, such as Claysville, Tenett, Dixon, Harbines, Higby, Irvington, Jewett, Loveland, and Yellow Bird, OH. The company's network as reflected in this handbook was most extensive in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois & Kentucky, while much sparser in other states, such as Missouri, Tennessee, & West Virginia. Rules for receipts, deliveries, collections, and bill acceptance were quite specific, with many requiring additional manuscript notes, or stamps by the agents, such as when receipting for live stock "always write in or across the receipt 'At Owner's risk as to Death, Escape, and Accidents.'" The Adams Express Co. was one of the earliest major express companies, along with Wells Fargo, American Express, and founded originally in 1840 by Alvin Adams who personally delivered securities, documents, and parcesl between Boston & New York. They claimed to have been the first Express Co. to follow the miners in the California gold camps, and were early expanders into Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. By 1882, the Adams Express Company operated over 20,000 miles of railroad track, had nearly 8,000 employees, and operated offices across the World. Their tariffs, freight, and currency structures covered bank-notes, gold & silver coin, parcels, freight, packages and more. The present manual also includes complete table of abbreviations and terminal points of routes occupied by the Adams Express Co. in the Western Division. The Adams Express Co., still operates now as a diversified equity fund, focuses on energy and natural resources stocks. No copies in Worldcat, or other institutional record holdings; See: The Adams Express Company: 150 years (2004); The Express Companies, Builders of Wooden Railway Cars (2008).
