The formal garden is being reinvented to reflect the tastes and lifestyle of today's gardener. A dynamic new approach to gardening, New Classic Gardens explores how traditional formal design is being reinterpreted to suit today's small-scale outdoor spaces. Descriptive text, inspiring photographs, and garden plans cover everything from the ingredients of modern formality to creating gardens that require minimum maintenance. Experienced and first-time gardeners alike will welcome the exciting opportunity of stretching traditional classic order to create a new formality that is both dynamic and more individual.

About the Author:
Jill Billington is a successful garden designer, lecturer and author. A natural innovator, she is increasingly known for her subtle approach to contemporary garden design. She has won a number of awards worldwide including a Silver Gilt medal at the 1991 Chelsea Flower Show. As well as a number of television appearances, she is also the author of the very successful Really Small Gardens, Architectural Foliage, Small Gardens with Style, Summer Gardens, and Planting Companions. Jill lives and works in the United Kingdom.
From Booklist:
Garden style is evolving. Contemporary landscape design encompasses a surprising range of materials, innovative elements, and the architectural structure of plants used in ways that accentuate formal layouts to the fullest extent. Billington illustrates and affirms trends that define a modern approach: familiar themes such as box hedging and mown grass are shown to function in declarative ways, creating striking patterns that transcend the traditional. In many ways, she has put together a sourcebook, revealing a wealth of ideas for a more minimalist garden aesthetic. Perhaps time will tell which designs possess the requisite substance to genuinely influence the next generation of gardens. But gardeners who peruse this handsome portfolio of photographs and informative narrative will surely come away pondering whether to integrate some unexpectedly fresh features into their own private sanctuaries.
