With the aim of capturing the enormous variety of this magical region of Germany, Rodney Bolt spent over two years travelling through the unspoiled backwoods of the Bavarian forest, along the rolling countryside of the Romantic Road, and among the craggy peaks of the Alps. Whether you want to paraglide over sparkling lakes, discover hidden villages of half-timbered houses or marvel at soaring Gothic cathedrals and fairytale castles, the Cadogan guide will point you in the right direction. This fully revised and updated second edition contains knowledgeable and entertaining insights into Roman ruins and Romanesque chapels; best-value and discerning listings on where to stay and eat, drink, shop and play; and practical, reliable advice on music festivals and Christmas markets, vineyards and local breweries.

About the Author:
Rodney Bolt grew up in Africa, was educated at Cambridge University where he studied English; and now lives in Amsterdam. He has traveled throughout Europe and has lived and worked in Greece, the Netherlands, and Germany. In 1992, he set off in a battered Volkswagen van on a two-year-long journey through newly-united Germany to research this book. This experience resulted in a steep learning curve in mechanics, and a Travel Writer of the Year award from the German National Tourist Office in 1994. He is also author of Cadogan's guides Amsterdam and Madeira & Porto Santo.

Münich can't decide if she is a sophisticated courtier or a boisterous village wench. Her architectural wardrobe is a resplendent array of royal cast-offs, and her jewelbox dazzles, but one whiff of hops and she's dancing on the table. Here is German high society, one of the world's great opera houses, transcendent art--and the Oktoberfest, the world's beeriest beano.
