Edward Everett Hale was born in 1822 in Roxbury, Massachusetts and was the son of Nathan Hale. He was a minister, reformer and American author who was unanimously elected Chaplain of the United States Senate. Hale personally knew many famous people of his time, including presidents John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt and William How Taft. Harvard educated, Hale wanted to abolish slavery, reform public education and advance tolerance. He also wanted the government to regulate monopolies. Hale was once asked about his role as the U.S. Senate Chaplain. "Do you pray for the Senators, Dr. Hale?" Hale responded, "No, I look at the Senators and pray for the country!" Hale's most famous writing is "The Man Without a Country" which was published in 1863. Edward Everett Hale had nine children and died in the summer of 1909 at the age of 87.
