Review:
A unique feature of this collection is a background skit placed between the stories, pulling from Halloween lore and tradition. This newest Graphic Classics book is a treasure-trove of great literature, illustrated in ways that make these gems come alive. I love this series! --Alice Berger, Bergers Book Reviews
Adapting stories by such luminaries as H.P Lovecraft, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain, Washington Irving, and more, Halloween Classics is a fantastic collection. Well-written and wonderfully illustrated throughout, this really is a must-have for fans of comics, horror, and literature alike. And best of all, it's all-ages material, suitable for anyone 12 (or slightly younger, depending on the kid) and up. --Bob Freeman, Monster Librarian
In addition to adapting genuinely classic works into accessible and fun comics for all ages, for this volume Mr. Pomplun and his crew have also created a sly EC tribute book as well. There's a framing story done in the EC style by Mort Castle and Kevin Atkinson introducing each story in the book that left me grinning from ear to ear, and the stories chosen for adaptation this time out are very cool. My favorite, though, has to be The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari , adapted from the original screenplay with art by Matt Howarth. Strongly recommended. --Greg Hatcher, Comic Book Resources
From Booklist:
This volume in the Graphic Classics series includes an adaptation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” and lesser-known stories by Mark Twain, H. P. Lovecraft, and Arthur Conan Doyle, with humorous interludes hosted by Nerwin the Docent. Depending on the mood of the story, the full-color art ranges from humorous to spooky. Teens looking for something different in their Halloween reading will find murderous mummies, displaced dead, headless horsemen, and a very bizarre kind of the undead. The book includes brief biographies of the writers and artists. Grades 7-10. --Kat Kan
