Review:
Elizabeth Fletcher has written a marveously engaging and bittersweet tale of the 'Big U'. --John B. Hightower, former CEO and President of the Mariners' Museum Newport, News, VA
Here is a children's book par excellence! And a book for all people, as well. Both boys and girls should love it becasue of its great stories of the sea, how beautiful the S.S. UNITED STATES is and its history as the most powerful ocean liner ever built! --The late Frank O. Braynard, author of The Big Ship also about the S.S. UNITED STATES
Elizabeth Fletcher has produced for young people the story of America's ship of the Twentieth Century, the Big U. The story unfolds as a biographical, anecdotal recollection of the Big U and its last Captain, Commodore Leroy J. Alexanderson, through the eyes, ears and mouth of the Commodore's grandson, Jon. From the very first sentence, this labor of love will bring back many memories for those who love the sea and serve as a reminder to all of this country's maritime heritage. More important, it is a must read for suture generations who will also have the opportunity to learn of the world's greatest and fastest superliner, the S.S. UNITED STATES. --Allan J. Lonschein, Former Director of Maritime Industry Museum, Fort Schuyler
