From Library Journal:
Rossetti is "a remarkably underrated poet," a victim of "the antiromantic stance" of modern criticism. So contends Hollander in his introduction to this selection of Rossetti's poetry--poetry that "will be felt . . . as tough, creatively problematic, rejecting easy or fake answers to ultimate questions, masterfully coping with the central modern problem of treating the great in the small." Hollander defends Rossetti against charges of being superficial and over-literary and emphasizes his virtues as a fastidious composer whose best work exhibits sumptuous imagery, exact expression, and great emotional and erotic power. All of Rossetti's major work is here--including the complete The House of Life and A Trip to Paris and Belgium . This is the only substantial and inexpensive anthology of Rossetti's poetry available in the United States. Recommended.
