From Library Journal:
If, as Harace Walpole opined, "The world is a comedy to those who think," this book is for the pundits among us. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum of Television & Radio (March- September 1996), it tracks stand-up comedians on the tube from Caesar to Seinfeld. Essays by Larry Gelbart, Denis Leary, Marvin Kitman, Anne Beatts, George Plimpton, and others examine types of comedians, e.g., "Politicos," and types of comedy, e.g., "Modern Angst." These are intercut with "A word from," short observations by noted comedians and snippets of classic comedy routines. Glossy black-and-white and color photos punctuate the text. The only thing lacking here is a laugh track. A good choice for general and performing arts collections.?Carolyn M. Mulac, Chicago P.L.
