From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6AThe serendipitous discovery in 1995 of the frozen remains of a pre-Columbian Inca girl has been hailed as one of the most significant archaeological finds of this decade. Her body is one of several uncovered in recent years, including that of a 5000-year-old mummy found in the Alps and chronicled by Getz in Frozen Man (Holt, 1994). The young woman, whom archaeologist Johan Reinhard calls Juanita, has been particularly well preserved. This compact volume gets right to the point, describing how the body was found, how her clothes and other artifacts were salvaged, and the significance of her ritual death. Black-and-white photographs supplement soft, frosty drawings. Reinhard's Discovering the Inca Ice Maiden (National Geographic, 1998) includes more photographs and an eyewitness account. Getz's book, however, reads like great adventure fiction and will entice even reluctant readers.AJeanette Larson, Texas State Library, Austin
