From Publishers Weekly:
Hastings ( A Spy in Winter ) dusts off a nearly forgotten incident in the recent history of the Middle East in this well-paced, exciting novel about the World War I struggle between Great Britain and Turkey for control of then-Palestine. Ruth Mendelson is a Jewish spy for the British who has been betrayed to Murad Pasha, the Turkish military chief of Palestine. Murad is prepared to execute heruntil the Kaiser's intelligence attache, Count Von Traub, suggests a clever scheme: send Ruth to Cairo to spy on the British, and threaten to kill her father if she won't cooperate. Ruth is doubly jeopardized because she must avoid meeting her Zionist lover and espionage contact, Saul Donsky, who serves with the British army in Cairo. Hastings does a sturdy job of summoning up the atmosphere of WW I-era Palestine, Egypt and Turkey. He credibly characterizes real figures such as General Allenby and Lawrence of Arabia. Although he can't resist potboiler prose and signals the happy ending far too soon, he spins an absorbing story full of period details and adventure.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The Devil's Spy is based on a most extraordinary true story of espionage and intrigue. At the time of the First World War, the small Jewish community in Palestine thought the only way to save their brothers was by strict loyalty to the Turks. But the Aaronsohn family felt differently. They believed the Jews should help the British to liberate Palestine, thereby paving the way to the creation of a Jewish state in the Holy Land. They secretly established contact with British intelligence and founded the NILI espionage network. It's headquarters was the sprawling Aaronsohn mansion on the crest of Mount Carmel. The leader of the network was the beautiful young Sarah Aaronsohn. She, along with her brothers and her lover, the Russian-born Joseph Lishansky, obtained and transmitted vital information--including detailed plans for the defense of Southern Palestine--to the British in Cairo. On October 1, 1917, the NILI network was betrayed. Turkish soldiers led by Jemal Pasha broke into the Aaronsohn house. Sarah's old father was tortured.Lishansky was captured and hanged in Damascus. Sarah refused to talk. She withstood four days of beatings and torture, then shot herself with a tiny pistol she had concealed for the occasion. My story starts where Sarah's life ended. Michael Hastings Peopled with colorful, historical characters such as Lawrence of Arabia and General Allenby, The Devil's Spy is a masterly tale of adventure, and a testament to the power of life.
