In Fifty and the Fox , Fifty, an animated tractor, invents a clever scheme to frighten away a fox who is menacing the henhouse. A lively, nicely varied text is complemented by appealing action-filled pictures in warm colors and a caricature style of the anthropomorphized vehicle. In Ruff Leaves Home , a fox cub looking for adventure wanders away from the den, becomes lost, and successfully fends for himself by scavenging in the trash baskets in a town park. In the spring he meets a vixen. After their cubs are born, Ruff Junior decides he, too, wants to explore. Ruff's separation from his mother is non-threatening, and his solitary life natural. His curiosity leads him into adventures, but he is never in real danger. The foxes are personified, but not enough to detract from true-to-life behavior. Meticulous, almost photographically realistic and richly colored depictions of the animals from a variety of perspectives against soft, less-defined backgrounds highlight their copper beauty.
