Mark Sperring lives in Bristol and works as a bookseller. This is his fourth picture book with the Chicken House, after Wanda's First Day, The Fairytale Cake and Find-a-Saurus. Liz and Kate Pope are identical twins who live in Derbyshire. Mermaid Dreams follows their spectacular debut Wanda's First Day.

PreSchool-K–As Meriam's mother is helping her get ready for bed, the child describes her day in the ocean, where she went deeper than the dolphins and the octopuses. When the woman combs her daughter's hair, she finds a shell and seaweed in it. The girl then explains that she swam so far to get her mother a pearl. A little fish jumps out from her clean ears and a baby crab emerges from her scrubbed neck. Meriam falls asleep while resting her head gently on a starfish. The twist comes on the last spread, where readers see the lower half of Meriam for the first time: she is a mermaid.
