When the Lilacs Bloom (Prairie Rose Series #3) - Softcover

Although definitely within the Christian romance fiction subgenre, this gently paced story of early 20th-century rural Illinois, with its carefully detailed descriptions of small-town everyday life, is also pure Americana. This final book in Kirby's trilogy (Prairie Rose and As the Lily Grows, both Avon, 1997) opens as newlyweds Libby and Ike Galloway cross the threshold of their cabin in Edgewood and concludes in a family celebration 11 years later?family scandals, old hostilities, and assorted difficulties having been resolved or at least accepted. Although use of dialect is occasionally distracting, the characters are nicely rendered and the details of maple syrup making are fascinating. While not a true romance, this book will appeal to period Americana devotees who are not put off by the religious aspects. Kirby lives in McLean, Ill.
