From Library Journal:
Halpern, poet and editor of The Ecco Press and Antaeus magazine, distills 25 years of traveling in Italy in this charming if rather pretentious guide. He concentrates only on the route from Rome to Milan, on restaurants and food that he loves, and adds recommendations for things to see and places to stay. This is an invaluable guide for its clear and detailed explanations of what the food you are eating actually is : the mellifluous Italian menu descriptions have been translated into honest English. The wine descriptions may put the reader off, e.g., "rich, very deep--a wine engaging in a supreme fiction of its own." But Halpern's choices of restaurants in Venice are especially good. For comprehensive travel collections rather than a first purchase. --GraceAnne A. DeCandido, "Library Journal"
