Managers involved in the establishment of new woodland and short-rotation coppice on fertile lowland sites face distinctive vegetation management problems. Ex-agricultural and improved grassland sites are normally more fertile than the unimproved grassland sites usually associated with forestry planting. This can result in prolific weed growth competing for nutrients, light and moisture, which can lead to stunted tree growth or complete failure of new plantings.
